Frequently asked questions about Distributed IT Performance Management software

Get answers to common questions about Eaton's Distributed IT Performance Management software,  such as key benefits, what's included, and how it's installed and supported

What is Eaton’s Distributed IT Performance Management software?

Eaton’s Distributed IT Performance Management (DITPM) software is a powerful tool that allows you to monitor power devices such as uninterruptible power supplies (UPSs) and power distribution units (PDUs), as well as generators and larger PDUs with breaker panels, regardless of their location. This enables you to know what’s happening across your distributed infrastructure—from a few locations to thousands.

What kinds of customers can benefit from DITPM software?

Customers with at least 10 UPSs across two or more buildings or locations can benefit significantly from using our software. Examples include retail establishments such as grocery stores, gas stations and fashion; K-12 and higher education; healthcare such as hospitals, labs and medical buildings; and edge data centers.

What are the key benefits of DITPM software?

With our DITPM software, you’ll know what’s happening with the UPSs and PDUs across your distributed infrastructure with meaningful real-time alerts prioritized by severity, no nuisance alarms—so you’re only alerted when there’s a critical issue and escalation when alarms aren’t acknowledged to ensure critical issues are addressed.

The software also allows you to quickly troubleshoot and resolve equipment issues. With our software, you can:

  • Remotely control rackmount PDU outlets and rackmount UPS load segments—regardless of the vendor.
  • Automate device response and/or shutdown during critical power events or environmental stress conditions, like high temperature.
  • Reduce truck rolls and the need for on-site, non-IT staff to help troubleshoot equipment issues.
  • Have 24/7 insight into equipment performance, enabling you to remotely power cycle devices and remotely diagnose and take proactive corrective action when needed, like replacing a UPS battery that’s low.

And if you’re an Eaton hardware customer, you can remotely push firmware updates or configuration changes in bulk to your rackmount PDU and rackmount UPS network cards in minutes. This eliminates the need for updates to be made in-person and will help keep your organization safer from cybersecurity vulnerabilities.

What’s the difference between Eaton’s DCPM and DITPM software?

Our DITPM software is designed to monitor and manage power equipment (primarily UPSs and PDUs) in distributed environments, such as retail, education, healthcare and edge data centers, while our DCPM software provides tools for monitoring and managing the power, space, cooling and operational aspects of running a data center—specifically rack-mounted IT equipment such as servers, storage and compute.

What options are available with DITPM?

We offer two versions of DITPM software: Essential and Advanced. A side-by-side comparison of the features is available in our product comparison guide

Extensions are also available to add even more capabilities to the software. This includes a business intelligence dashboard, white label branding, non-core device monitoring and third-party integrations, such as Service Now and RF Code Centerscape.

What's the difference between DITPM Essential and Advanced?

As the name might imply, DITPM Essential provides the core tools needed to monitor and manage assets across multiple sites. This includes bulk device management, asset monitoring, alarms and notifications, reporting tools (including more than 30 out-of-the-box report templates and user-defined reports), IT automations and cybersecurity features.

DITPM Advanced provides additional capabilities, such as visual rack building, location and floorplan studio, smart alarm configurations, power infrastructure cabling, map with navigation tree, trend charts that include predictive analytics, capacity planning and more.

Is there a device limit for DITPM Essential and/or Advanced?

No, there is no device limit. The architecture can scale as needed to accommodate additional device and data loads.

How are devices counted with DITPM software?

We have defined two device types for DITPM: core and non-core.

Core devices support power, cooling and space (racks). One DITPM license supports one core device. If you would like to connect more than one device to DITPM, you will need to purchase a DITPM license for each core device. Every rack also requires a core license. So, if you’d like to support 10 UPSs and three racks with DITPM, you would need to purchase 13 DITPM perpetual or subscription licenses.

Any device that does not perform a power, cooling or space function, such as a door lock or video camera, is considered a non-core device. Non-core devices can be added to DITPM at no cost for asset management, viewing 3D rack elevations and cable mapping. If you would like to monitor a non-core device with DITPM, you will need to purchase the monitored device extension, Brightlayer Extension Monitored Device, for each non-core device.

To enable DITPM IT automations, you must purchase the IT automations extension, Brightlayer Extension IT Automation Host Device, for each host server. The IT automation extension does not limit the number of virtual machines or IT automations supported by a host server.

Which manufacturers are supported by DITPM software?

Our model library includes more than 30,000 models of devices from hundreds of manufactures across hundreds of device types. If a device is not currently included in our model library but utilizes a common communication protocol such as SNMP, MODBUS or BACnet, we will create a model for that device (requires annual support).

How is DITPM software installed?

The easiest and most common method for installing our software is direct deployment to a server in your virtual environment via our Open Virtualization Format (OVF). The software can also be installed on a traditional server or via a cloud implementation.

What are the minimum system requirements for installing DITPM software?

The resources required to host the software can be found in our OVF Appliance Installation Guide.

Does Eaton offer professional services for the installation and setup of its DITPM software?

Eaton offers professional services for all of our software offerings—ranging from a few hours of remote assistance to full, on-site implementation and training. Regardless of the number of hours purchased, all work will be completed by an Eaton software specialist.

Can DITPM software be integrated with other software?

Our software can be integrated with VMware and other software such as building management (BMSs), asset management (CMDB) and service desk (ITSM) systems to create a unified, cohesive software solution that improves efficiency, increases productivity and data accuracy, improves decision making and saves cost.
